College Football: Week 9

Brandon and I pulled even last week. We both finished 15-5. On upsets I was 2-1 and Brandon was 0-1. We both lost the WVU, Texas and Iowa picks, and we split the OU/Mizzou, Miami/UNC, OSU/Nebraska, and KSU/Baylor. The season standings are as follows with Brandon's first: 137-27 (5-9), 127-37 (5-14). The week 8 helmet sticker was unanimous and it goes to Taylor Martinez. He got exposed in week 7 in the loss to Texas. Neither his passing game or run game were up to par. Boy did he break away from that slump. Taylor tore apart the entire Oklahoma State defense. He was 23 for 35 with 323 passing yards and 5 passing touchdowns. He also ran the ball 19 times for 112 yards but failed to reach the endzone on the ground. Highly impressive effort from Taylor. Cam Newton got my runner up.

Due to Boise playing tonight and a busy rest of the week for me I didn't have time to to the game break downs or get some pictures up. The GOW is Oregon @ USC and the non top 25 game is the Michigan/Penn St. rivalry. Lots of good matchups and potential upsets.

College Football: Week 8

Another rough week for us both. Brandon beat me by one pick. I doubt I can dig myself out of the whole now. I'm losing more and more ground each week. Brandon was 14-6 (1-1) and I finished 13-7 (0-2). So far the standings are Brandon at 122-22 (5-8) with me at 112-32 (3-13). Being wrong on upsets is clearly being the difference for me thus far. Week seven's helmet sticker from me goes to Jermaine Kearse of Washington. He caught 9 passes from Jake Locker, had 146 yards and 4 TD's as the Huskies upset the Oregon State Beavers in double overtime. Brandon is going with co-helmet sticker winners for last week. It goes to both Kentucky QB Mike Hartline and WR Chris Matthews. Hartline was 32 of 42 with 349 yards through the air and 4 TD's. Matthews had 12 of those catches for 177 yards and 1 of the TD's as the Wildcats upset the first "number-one-killers" of the year, the South Carolina Gamecocks 31-28. They shutout SC in the second half. Great victory for UK.

The season begins to be interesting week by week now with the release of the BCS standings. Brandon and I will move away from the USA Today/Coaches Poll and start going with the BCS standings. We will still be picking one Non-Top 25 game a week.

#2 Oregon Ducks 6-0 (3-0) vs UCLA 3-3 (1-2) 7PM ET

Many are wondering why Oregon was only number two in the BCS standings. They have scored at least 42 points in every game this season. The last three weeks the defense has given up 31, 31 and 23 points. In the first three games they allowed 13 points total. I'm not too worried about UCLA exploiting that this week but later in the season the Ducks defense may have to shape up. Although, they were able to hold off Andrew Luck. This week I feel it's another blowout for Oregon. The Bruins do have that nice upset over Texas but I don't see that happening against "The Video Game Offense". Ducks win comfortably in ESPN 3D. Ore. 48 UCLA 24. Bramdon: Ore. 45 UCLA 24

#7 Michigan State Spartans 7-0 (3-0) vs Northwestern Wildcats 5-1 (1-1) 12 PM ET

Northwestern's record is a bit deceiving. Their loss to a 4-2 Purdue team may look good too but Purdue's schedule has been weak just like NW's. Vanderbilt is on a down year and Illinois State, Rice, C. Mich, and Minnesota aren't exactly desirable opponents. Hosting Kirk Cousins and the rest of Sparty will be a tough test. I do like Dan Persa and I can see him having a decent game with a TD or two, but don't look for an upset here folks. MSU will roll. MSU 35 NW 17. Brandon: MSU 34 NW 17.

#10 Ohio State Buckeyes 6-1 (2-1) vs Purdue Boilermakers 4-2 (2-0) 12 PM ET

The Buckeyes didn't last long as the number one team. They didn't exactly lose in a nail biter to Wisconsin either. Hopefully they can rebound off of that loss. As I mentioned before, Purdue is another Big Ten team who's had a pretty bad schedule thus far. Terelle Pryor will want revenge from their loss last week and the Boilermakers are next up. I don't see Purdue having enough to really do anything to stop him. OSU wins big. OSU 42 Pur. 17. Brandon: OSU 36 Pur. 16.

#19 Texas Longhorns 4-2 (2-1) vs Iowa State Cyclones 3-4 (1-2) 12 PM ET

Texas had the huge season saving win last week on the road at Nebraska. Many, including me had written them off after their two consecutive losses. Knocking off a top five school is great for your BCS resume. They look to stay alive in the Big XII and I don't see Iowa State doing much to stop them. Have they ever done much period? Nope. Texas takes the comfortable victory. UT 34 ISU 10. Brandon: Texas 34 ISU 12.
Noel Devine will help his
team improve to 6-1.

#20 West Virginia Mountaineers 5-1 (1-0) vs Syracuse Orange 4-2 (1-1) 12 PM ET

West Virginia continues to roll on in the Big One conference. I mentioned Syracuse's 4-1 record last week so if you want to know how credible they are as a 4-2 team this year, refer to last week's game breakdown for WVU and USF. Only two of those wins count toward going bowling this year. Syracuse didn't even compete against a bad Pitt team. They lost at home 45-14. This week they face the only team in the Big One conference. This one will be another blow out. Especially because it's a road game for the Orange. Don't be surprised if they lose out. WVU 53 SU 13. WVU 37 SU 20.

#25 Virginia Tech Hokies 5-2 (3-0) vs Duke Blue Devils 1-5 (0-3) 12 PM ET

The Hokies look to be recovering from their devastating loss to James Madison. They've won five straight and it will be six. I don't know what would be worst, the loss to JMU or if Duke upset them here. But don't worry, they won't. Big day for Tyrod Taylor and company. VT 47 Duke 7. Brandon: VT 42 Duke 20.

#23 Arkansas Razorbacks 4-2 (1-2) vs Mississippi Rebels 3-3 (1-2) 12:30 PM ET

The game last week against Auburn was close until Ryan Mallett suffered a concussion. His absence was felt as the Razorbacks got blown out and couldn't stop Cam Newton. Tyler Wilson did have good numbers as he filled in for Mallett. Arkansas faces yet another mobile quarterback. Jeremiah Masoli is no Cam Newton, but the Rebels have a lot of balance running the ball. Brandon Bolden is the leading rusher for Ole Miss with 550 yards and 5 TD's. Masoli has 6 INT's to go with his & 7 passing TD's so Arkansas will look for those opportunities to score. Look for a solid competitive SEC match up here. The Rebels will hang with the Razorbacks but Tyler Wilson is more than capable of filling in for Ryan Mallett if he is unable to return from his concussion. That is still up in the air. Regardless, the Hogs are victorious. Ark. 34 Ole Miss 26. Brandon: Ark. 34 Ole Miss 24.

#6 LSU Tigers 7-0 (4-0) @ #4 Auburn Tigers 7-0 (4-0) 3:30 PM ET

This game was our runner up for GOW. This will be an interesting game and has potential to be very exciting. What game that includes Cam Newton isn't exciting? LSU has had a few solid close victories through the first half of their 2010 season and they now find themselves number six in the BCS Standings. Surely upsetting the number four school will get them to play leap frog with the TCU Horned Frogs right ahead of them. I imagine they'd leap frog Boise State who's third. We will leave that up to the Auburn Tigers to do. LSU hasn't quite faced an athlete like Cam Newton and they're going to his home. Les Miles has been getting a lot of love this year ... but I don't see him pulling this one off. Auburn will take this one as Newton continues be atop the Heisman race candidates. UA 31 LSU 24. Brandon: UA 37 LSU 24.

Ricky Stanzi leads this
Iowa offense.
 #13 Wisconsin Badgers 6-1 (2-1) @ #15 Iowa Hawkeyes 5-1 (2-0) 3:30 PM ET

The Badgers were the second "Number One Killers" of the 2010 season. They beat Ohio State comfortably last week. Something I didn't even think would happen. I thought for sure Terrelle Pryor would get it done. Wisconsin proved their case and they will take that momentum to Kinnick Stadium as Iowa plays host to the Badgers. The Hawkeyes had their own solid victory last week. They traveled to the big house and beat Michigan. Denard Robinson went down with a concussion and Iowa took advantage of him being off the field. Great victory. This is a great Big Ten match up. Both teams have the potential to win the conference and they'll be playing with that motivation. I am a John Clay fan but I think Ricky Stanzi and Adam Robinson will lead their Hawkeyes to victory here. Look for a down to the wire match up. Even potentially an overtime or two. I like Iowa at home. Iowa 27 Wisc. 24. Brandon: Iowa 24 Wisc 21.

#16 Nebraska Cornhuskers 5-1 (1-1) @ #14 Oklahoma State Cowboys 6-0 (2-0) 3:30 PM ET

The Huskers are coming off of their very disappointing loss to Texas. The fans thought for sure this was their chance for revenge after last years controversial loss. Taylor Martinez was completely shut down. He ran for only 21 yards. OSU is flying under the radar in the Big XII and that may be good for them and their season ending match up versus in state rival (and now number one in the BCS) Oklahoma. I would like to see Taylor Martinez rebound after his bad game against the Longhorns. It seems NU was exposed and all the Cowboys have to do is shut down Martinez. OSU on the other hand has a well balanced offense and I see that being the difference. NU is going to run the ball. Everyone knows that. But watch out for Kendall Hunter and the Oklahoma State running game. That will open up the air for Weeden to throw to his favorite target in Justin Blackmon. OSU 31 NU 21. Brandon: NU 30 OSU 27.

Robert Griffin III hopes to lead
his Bears to bowl eligibilty. BU
hasn't done that since 1994.

#22 Kansas State Wildcats 5-1 (2-1) @ Baylor Bears 5-2 (2-1) 3:30 PM ET

The Bears have lost to every good team they've faced this year. They got clobbered by TCU and lost a tough game to Texas Tech. They are very well balanced on offense. Quarterback Robert Griffin III is just under 2000 yards for the year. He also likes to run the ball and has a very talented receiving core. K-State has also lost to the only good team they played and they got smashed by Nebraska. Taylor Martinez ran all over them. I do like Daniel Thomas to have a solid game on the ground with a TD or two but I think Baylor is a little bit more talented as a whole on offense and they will be too much for the Wildcats defense to handle. Especially with against a quarterback who is capable of running. They're too much for KSU. The Bears get their sixth win, but they still need another to go bowling because one of the wins is over a D-IAA Sam Houston State. BU 23 KSU 16. Brandon: KSU 38 BU 17.

#12 Stanford Cardinal 5-1 (2-1) vs Washington State Cougars 1-6 (0-4) 5 PM ET

Andrew Luck versus the Washington State Cougars? Yeah this one is a no brainer and there will be no surprises here. Huge game for Luck as the Cardinal shuts out (yes I'm calling a shutout folks) the Cougars. Will WSU ever be good again? Stanford 55 WSU 0. Brandon: Stanford 41 WSU 14.

#9 Utah Utes 6-0 (3-0) vs Colorado State Rams 2-5 (1-2) 6 PM ET

The Utes continue their weak schedule against CSU. All Utah fans are circling the calendar for the TCU game in November but head coach Kyle Whittingham is making sure his players stay focused. All they can do is just keep winning one game at a time and they will do just that when they host the Rams. Steve Fairchild looks as if he had CSU back on the map in the Mountain West. Unfortunately his Rams will suffer their sixth loss of the season and are now one loss away from missing a bowl game. Utah 48 CSU 10. Brandon: Utah 47 CSU 21.

#8 Alabama Crimson Tide 6-1 (3-1) @ Tennessee Volunteers 2-4 (0-3) 7 PM ET

The Vols are looking to get their first SEC win of the season at home. Wouldn't that be nice? A lot of folks including myself agree that the Tide still aren't out of the picture for defending their BCS title. They didn't necessarily blow Ole Miss out of the water but a W is a W. Especially in this conference. I have a hard time seeing Tennessee pulling this one off. Bama 28 Ten 10. Brandon: Bama 28 Ten 20.

#21 South Carolina Gamecocks 4-2 (2-2) @ Vanderbilt Commodores 2-4 (1-2) 7 PM ET

Talk about inconsistent. One week removed from upsetting the number one team in the land the Gamecocks lose to Kentucky. Looks like upsetting Bama in the regular season will be the highlight of the year. Having said that I do like them to beat the Commodores on their home field. Vandy is just flat out bad. Look for a big game for both Stephen Garcia and Marcus Lattimore. SC 38 Vandy 20. Brandon: SC 30 Vandy 14.

#24 Mississippi State Bulldogs 5-2 (2-2) vs UAB Blazers 2-4 (1-2) 7 PM ET

Earlier in the season I was giving the Bulldogs lots of love and picking upsets. They let me down and I totally dropped them. I didn't even consider them to beat Florida and yet they did and now they find themselves at the bottom of the BCS standings. They step away from SEC play for another week to finish non-conference play in 2010. Not much really to say about UAB. They lost to Tennessee in overtime earlier this season. They won't come out of Starkville with a win. Not even close. MSU 37 UAB 10. Brandon: MSU 28 UAB 10.

TJ Yates hopes to get UNC back
into the top 25.

NON TOP-25 GAME
North Carolina Tar Heels 4-2 (2-1) @ Miami (FL) Hurricanes 4-2 (2-1) 7:30 PM ET

Solid match up here in the ACC. Both schools have been in the top 25 this season. North Carolina is on a four game winning streak and will be looking to take that momentum to Sun Life Stadium. Miami (FL) is trying to get back to powerhouse regularity. Jacory Harris has good passing numbers except for his 9 INT's. TJ Yates has 11 touchdowns but only 1 pick this season. Both teams try to make their case to win the ACC and both are very capable of that. As far as this one game goes, I understand it's in Coral Gables but I think the Tar Heels play a little bit more clean then the Canes. Miami's turnover trouble will end up being the difference in this game. Look for a close one with the Heels coming out on top. UNC 27 Miami (FL) 20. Brandon: Miami (FL) 30 UNC 21.

Blaine Gabbert has many weapons along side him on this
Tiger offense. Will that be enough to upset the Sooners?

GAME OF THE WEEK
#1 Oklahoma Sooners 6-0 (2-0) @ #11 Missouri Tigers 6-0 (2-0) 8 PM ET

Some were saying Oklahoma didn't belong atop the BCS standings when they were released. They struggled against Utah State, Air Force and Cincinnati and some thought that would be enough to keep them away from the top. Apparently not. The Tigers are next up to play "beat the number one" and will be trying to upset the Sooners on their home field. That would be three weeks in a row the number one team goes down. What a phenomenal match up we have here. Landry Jones is doing a fantastic job taking over for Sam Bradford. After a tough freshman season Jones has thrown 14 touchdowns and only 3 picks. Ryan Broyles is his main target while Demarco Murray is providing very reliable insurance on the ground. Blaine Gabbert only has 3 picks this season as well to go with his 10 touchdowns. The Tigers also have a balanced running game. Mizzou fans like the fact that beating the #1 team could get them to perhaps jump TCU and Boise State in the BCS standings. That will not be an easy task to conquer. The Sooners have had a rough time putting teams away exempting last week and the Florida State game. I like this one to be a thriller. Down to the wire and has all the potential to be taken into overtime. The difference for me ... (drum roll) will be the home field advantage. OU's depth hasn't been tested very much so if the Tigers can shut down Murray and or Broyles I believe they'll take the victory. Missouri has a little bit more depth and have proven they have more than one weapon at each position. The Tigers will take down the Sooners. Mizzou 23 OU 19. Brandon: OU 34 Mizzou 30.

#5 TCU Horned Frogs 7-0 (3-0) vs Air Force Falcons 5-2 (3-1) 8 PM ET

My hopes have been high for the Falcons this year. I and many others thought they were going to be a sleeper in the Mountain West. After last weeks loss to Sand Diego State those hopes have fallen. That was unexpected and I believe their momentum has been taken from them. Not many teams beat TCU in Fort Worth. The Frogs are known for their solid defense especially at stopping the run and that's all Air Force does. This one won't be close. With all due respect to the academy, you won't be competing in this one unless you learn how to have a dependable passing game. TCU 38 AFA 14. Brandon: TCU 35 AFA 20.

#18 Arizona Wildcats 5-1 (2-1) vs Washington Huskies 3-3 (2-1) 10:15 PM ET

I am having a hard time figuring out the Huskies this season. Heck, I'm having a hard time figuring out the entire Pac-10 besides Oregon. The Huskies don't have consecutive wins or losses this year. They lost to a bad BYU team, destroyed a terrible Syracuse team, got demolished by a great Nebraska team, upset a solid USC squad by a point, lost by ten to Arizona State who has been struggling for some time now, and then upset Oregon State in double overtime. I honestly don't know how to take that team. Jake Locker has been up and down all year. The Wildcats recovered from their tough loss to Oregon State and are hoping to be bowl eligible after this week and I believe they will. Not just because I want Washington to continue with their pattern, but because the Wildcats are at home and it's time for them to get their act together if they want a trip to the Rose Bowl. Nick Foles has many different weapons to give the ball to while Locker is the main man for UW. If he struggles, the whole team struggles. If the Cats shut down Locker, the game is over. I'm not saying they will necessarily succeed at shutting him down completely, but I do believe that AZ has more weapons than the Huskies. Arizona 27 UW 17. Brandon: Zona 35 UW 24.

Amidst Significant Changes, The War Remains

Since 1896 the University of Utah and Brigham Young University have played each other every year in football (exempting the war years) and they've played each other every year in basketball since 1922. (BYU was known as the Brigham Young Academy aka BYA until 1922). Their rivalry is known as the Holy War and is one of the most bitter rivalries in all of college sports. This last summer it became even more bitter.

Andrew Bogut was the #1
overall pick in the 2005 NBA
draft.
Urban Meyer began the Utah
football legacy and their jump
to the Pac-10 may have been
triggered from his coaching
tenure.
Utah has a storied basketball program reaching many NCAA tournaments, 15 sweet sixteen appearances, 4 elite eight appearances, runner up in 1998 and were tournament champions in 1944. (They were in the final four when Don Haskins coached Texas-Western to a championship. The first time a single team started and played only black players. Texas Western is now known as UTEP). Until recently, Utah basketball has been top notch. The football program didn't leave much of a dent on the national radar until 2003 and have remained there since. They've reached two BCS bowl games, being victorious in each of them. The Utes were the first team from a non automatic qualifying conference to reach a BCS bowl and also to win a BCS game. They are the original "BCS Busters". Their last bowl loss was in the 1996 Copper Bowl to Wisconsin. That puts them at nine consecutive bowl wins. In 2005 Utah became the only school who's athlete was selected number one overall in both the NFL and NBA drafts in the same year. Now, the school moves away from the Mountain West Conference and mediocrity, to the Pacific 10 (soon to be Pacific 12) conference and the big time.
Lavell Edwards put BYU
football on the map and has
since had the stadium named
after him.

Jimmer Fredette led BYU to
it's first NCAA tournament
victory since 1993.
BYU's basketball program hasn't really had many great moments known nationally. The most prestigious moment in BYU basketball history happened against the University of Notre Dame in the 1981 Sweet 16 when Danny Ainge went the length of the court in just seconds to lay the game winner in the basket. That would be the last time the Cougars would reach the Elite Eight. Since then, they've only had five first round victories in the big dance, and they just recently snapped a seventeen year drought reaching the second round for the first time since 1993. Coach Dave Rose has led them to five consecutive 20+ plus win seasons for the first time in BYU history. Last year they won 30 games for the first time ever. The Football team used to be known as QBU, having several All-American quarterbacks, one of them winning the Heisman Trophy in 1990. They also won a National Championship in 1984. From 2006-2009 they were one of five schools who had 10 or more wins each of those four seasons. Starting in 2011 the basketball team will compete in the West Coast Conference while the football team leaves the Mountain West Conference to be Independent.

Ty Detmer won the 1990
Heisman Trophy and set
several NCAA records.
Alex Smith used his arm and legs to
lead the BCS Busting Utes. He was
the #1 overall pick in the 2005 NFL
Draft.
In football Utah leads the head to head series 53-34-4 with Utah hosting the game 57 times. The two schools didn't start rotating it between stadiums until 1965 ('72 and '73 were both in Salt Lake while '74 and '75 were both in Provo). Before then, Utah hosted it 34 of the 45 years. BYU only beat them five times during that stretch. Since they started rotating every year BYU has won 29 of the 45 games with their longest streak being nine years from 1979-1987 and 19-2 from 1972-1992. BYU's football program was more prestigious than that of the Utes for a long time. When LaVell Edwards retired from Brigham Young, that's when things started to change. Gary Crowton took over for him and he went 1-4 against Utah and watched them bust the BCS in 2004 coached by Urban Meyer. The Utes busted the BCS again in 2008 with a BYU alum Kyle Whittingham at head coach. That year, BYU head coach Bronco Mendenhall started a slogan in the preseason entitled "The Quest For Perfection" as the Cougars were expected to be the top potential BCS Buster that year. Utah poetically lived up to that Quest while BYU ended with two losses. Since 2003 Utah is 69-19 while BYU is 58-29. Cougar fans aren't used to seeing the Utes competing with them on the national radar like that. In basketball the two schools are even at 125 a piece. Since 2003 BYU is 157-68 while Utah is 135-91. Similar to football, Utah fans aren't used to BYU competing with Utah's storied basketball program. Currently in football Utah is 6-0 (2-0) and is looking like they may make another BCS run. BYU is off to it's worst start since 1973. They're 2-4 (1-1) and hoping they can stay alive and make a bowl game. The Mountain West basketball preseason standings came out this week that featured BYU at number two with Utah at number six. BYU's All American Point Guard Jimmer Fredette was named the preseason conference MVP. The two sports are reversing rolls ... something the history of this rivalry hasn't seen.

This bitter rivalry will see something it hasn't in it's history. Next year kicks off (and tips off) a new era in the Holy War. For the first time ever the schools won't be in the same conference. There has been much grumble among Utah fans saying they wish to never play BYU again, thinking they're superior. While Utah made the jump to the Pac-10 (soon to be 12) that left BYU fans wondering what was going to happen. They were nervous about being left behind and some just had sour grapes. With the movement to the WCC, Independence and the Pac-10, they will both be getting more exposure than they've ever had from TV deals etc... The Pac-10 has a contact with Fox Sports Network and BYU landed an eight year contract with ESPN. Utah though, is clearly in the better situation and their movement triggered the move made by BYU. It seemed inevitable.

Why would anyone think these changes would desecrate this rivalry? Recently it was announced that the football teams will play each other the next two years in September rather than the last game of the year (which will be odd to see), and the basketball teams will be playing each other just once a season the first weekend in December for the next four years. Atheltic directors Chris Hill of Utah and Tom Holmoe of Brigham Young both know what this rivalry means to the state of Utah and to the fans of both schools. Regardless of what anyone may say, the Holy War lives on (these schools love to hate each other making almost nothing "Holy" about it). No matter who has had the better run nationally, when it comes to the match up, it can swing either way. These schools need each other. These fans need each other. This war won't be much of a war without them. The future of this rivalry is bright, even with these changes. It will provide a new fire for both schools. Even though some may wish for it to end, deep down we all know the war must remain, and remain it will.

College Football: Week 7

If I was going to catch up to Brandon, last week would have been the time to do it. He finished the week 13-7 (1-4). But I didn't trust my gut with Oregon State, I ate my words saying the FSU/Miami (FL) game wouldn't be a blowout ... it was, but not for my pick, and USC couldn't hang on to beat Stanford. I finished the week 12-8 (0-3). I'm digging myself further in the whole. That puts Brandon at 108-16 (4-7) and me at 99-25 (3-11). Ouch. Lets hope I can switch gears for the second half of the season. My helmet sticker for week 6 goes to Taylor Martinez. I almost went with Cam Newton of Auburn again, but Martinez's Huskers played a 4-0 Kansas State team and embarrassed them in front of their home crowd 48-13. Taylor threw the ball 7 times. He completed 5 of those passes for 128 yards no TD's and 1 INT. That doesn't look that great until I tell you he ran the ball 15 times for 241 yards and 4 TD's. Incredible performance for Taylor Martinez. Brandon also had a rough time giving his helmet sticker away but decided on Andrew Luck of Stanford. Andrew threw 24 passes and completed 20 of them for 285 yards and 3 touchdowns. He also ran it 6 times for 40 yards and the Cardinal were able to beat USC on a last second field goal.

We finally have a new number one team this week. There are a lot of solid conference matchups too and several potential upsets. (That I will pick incorrectly of course.)

#25 West Virginia Mountaineers 4-1 vs. South Florida Bulls 3-2 (0-1) 7:30 PM ET

USF's record may look better than they really are. They lost to Syracuse last week. That should speak for itself. (No one can argue. Yes the Orange are 4-1 but that doesn't look good when their other wins are Akron, Maine and Colgate). They got blown out by Florida a week after they blew out Stony Brook. The other two wins took place against Sun Belt teams WKU and FAU. The Hilltoppers hung with them but lost 24-12 and the Bulls had no problems against the Owls. WVU now represents the Big East in the national spotlight being the only ranked team from the conference and I don't see why they shouldn't be after this game. WVU 31 USF 10. Brandon: WVU 35 USF 16.

Daniel Thomas' running
abilities are KSU's main
offensive threat.
 NON TOP25 GAME
Kansas State Wildcats 4-1 (1-1) @ Kansas Jayhawks 2-3 (0-1)

K-State got exposed greatly on Thursday last week against Taylor Martinez and the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Now they face in state rival Kansas and hope to rebound from that blowout loss. The Jayhawks have been inconsistent this year. They lost 6-3 to North Dakota State in week one then regrouped to upset then #15 Georgia Tech 28-25 the following week. Since then they lost to Southern Miss and Baylor on the road while beating New Mexico State at home. Hosting the Wildcats for the "Battle of the Governers Cup" may not be an easy task. Even though KSU got destroyed last week I see them getting things done offensively. I doubt Kansas has two players rush for 241 and 110 yards. The Jayhawks don't have the defense to stop Daniel Thomas on the ground and that should open up the air for Carson Coffman. K-State improves to 5-1. KSU 34 KU 17. Brandon: KSU 27 KU 21.

#11 Michigan State Spartans 6-0 (2-0) vs Illinois Fighting Illini 3-2 (1-1) 12 PM ET

The Fighting Illini had a stunning blowout victory in Happy Valley over a struggling Penn State team in week six. Hopefully they can bring that momentum to Spartan Stadium. Michigan State had a convincing win over Michigan as they shut down Heisman candidate Denard Robinson. Kirk Cousins was on his game when the Wolverines came to town as they rolled to a 34-17 victory. This could be a long day for Illinois. PSU is having a down year so don't plan on them getting an upset two weeks in a row in Big Ten play. Sparty cruises and may find themselves in the top ten. MSU 44 Illini 20. Brandon: MSU 41 Illini 17.

#17 Florida State Seminoles 5-1 (3-0) vs. Boston College Eagles 2-3 (0-2) 12 PM ET

FSU made up for their embarrassing blowout loss to Oklahoma in week two by doing the same on the road to the Hurricanes of Miami (FL). That game wasn't even close. The Seminoles offense is firing on all cylinders since the OU game. They've scored at least 31 points in each of the four games since. BC is struggling this year and is on a current three game losing streak. They must bring their A game to Doak Campbell Stadium but that may be wishful thinking for Eagles fans. FSU is hot right now led by senior quarterback Christian Ponder. I don't see a slip up happening here. FSU 37 BC 14. Brandon: FSU 43 BC 21.

Jerrod Johnson will look to
solve his INT problems as
the Aggies host Mizzou.
 #19 Missouri Tigers 5-0 (1-0) @ Texas A&M Aggies 3-2 (0-1) 12 PM ET

Mizzou finally leaves Faurot Field and travels to College Station. They've looked very impressive so far this season. Blaine Gabbert has completed 120 of 180 passes. That is their forte and they will will look to use that weapon on the Aggie defense. A&M is coming off of two close losses. Jerrod Johnson's passing numbers are great just like Gabbert's except Johnson can't stop throwing INT's. He has 9 so far this season. Christine Michael provides a nice safety valve on the ground for Jerrod. I like this matchup and I like the Aggies to pull the upset. Missouri hasn't really proven themselves against a solid opponent. Squeaking by San Diego State by three isn't exactly what you like to see on your resume. Even if SDSU is on the up rise. Leaving home to face a balanced offensive attack will be too much of a feat for the Tigers to accomplish right now. I like the Aggies in this one. TAMU 28 Mizzou 24. Brandon: Mizzou 34 TAMU 30.

#4 Nebraska Cornhuskers 5-0 (1-0) vs Texas Longhorns 3-2 (1-1) 3:30 PM ET

After the embarrassing loss to UCLA at home the Longhorns played well in the Red River Rivalry but fell short 28-20. The Huskers had the huge blowout win on the road at KSU. Taylor Martinez led the way as he's done all year and he won't show any signs of stopping. I like this game to be competitive but Nebraska will be too much for Texas to handle. With all due respect to Mack Brown I don't think the Longhorns have enough to handle this one. Plus, NU will be looking for revenge from last years controversial Big XII title game. NU 31 Texas 21. Brandon: NU 36 Texas 17.

Cam Newton will try to help his Tigers improve to 7-0.
GAME OF THE WEEK
#7 Auburn Tigers 6-0 (3-0) vs #13 Arkansas Razorbacks 4-1 (1-1) 3:30 PM ET

What a match up we have here. It's the Cam Newton vs Ryan Mallett show. The Tigers return home after their victorious trip to Kentucky. They won on a last second field goal. Arkansas defeated Texas A&M by a touchdown. I hate this pick because I love both quarterbacks and I want to see both schools do well in the SEC. I must get over it and pick my victor. This one has all the necessary factors to be a thriller. It could go down to which QB is on the field for the final series. Ryan Mallett will show his NFL worth with his huge decision making abilities and arm strength. I'm going with the mobile quarterback in this one. Cam Newton is just too dangerous and I feel that Auburn just has a few more weapons than the Razorbacks. Don't be surprised to see Arkansas pull it off, but I'm going with Auburn. UA 27 Ark 24. Brandon: Ark. 28 Aub 23.

Rich Rod's Wolverines look to avoid
their second consecutive loss.
 #14 Iowa Hawkeyes 4-1 (1-0) @ #25 Michigan Wolverines 5-1 (1-1) 3:30 PM ET

Denard Robinson was completely shutdown by instate rival Michigan State last week. He will show is true Heisman colors this week whether he can rebound, and I do believe he can. Iowa does have a powerful offense led by Ricky Stanzi and Adam Robinson but they've not seen a guy like Robinson yet. The only other road game they've had they lost to Arizona. Not sure if that has anything to do with it but regardless Denard will want revenge and also put hope back in his Heisman run. Iowa is the next opponent on the schedule so watch out Hawkeyes. Rich Rod's Wolverines come away with upset number two of the week. Michigan 35 Iowa 21. Brandon: Iowa 30 Mich 24.

#18 Oklahoma State Cowboys 5-0 (1-0) @ Texas Tech Red Raiders 3-2 (1-2) 3:30 PM ET

I'd hate to see Texas Tech get their third loss in four weeks, only because I've always been a fan of their offense. Taylor Potts is a stud, but I don't think they have enough weapons to matchup with the Cowboys. The Raiders will have to shut down both Brandon Weeden and Kendall Hunter. Even though Justin Blackmon is OK ST's top receiver, just shutting him down won't be enough. His fellow corps are more than capable of picking it up if they need to. This offense is just too powerful. Look for a shootout. OSU 48 TTU 38. Brandon: OSU 40 TTU 24.

#5 TCU Horned Frogs 6-0 (2-0) vs. BYU Cougars 2-4 (1-1) 4 PM ET

The Horned Frogs are picked to win this game by four touchdowns, and rightfully so. BYU is having one of their worst seasons in school history. Even though they snapped a four game losing streak with a win over San Diego State, traveling to Fort Worth will not be an easy task. TCU is competing with Boise State (and perhaps Utah if they can crack the top 5) for a BCS bowl bid and possibly a BCS title game bid. BYU's defense did look better as Bronco Mendenhall took over for ex D-Coordinator Jaime Hill, I still don't think they'll have enough to pull the upset. TCU 48 BYU 27. Brandon: TCU 34 BYU 17.

#12 South Carolina Gamecocks 4-1 (2-1) @ Kentucky Wildcats 3-3 (0-3) 6 PM ET

The Wildcats have lost three straight and they've all been to SEC opponents. They hung with Ole Miss and Auburn but fell short by a total of 10 points. They will try to knock off the number one killers. The Gamecocks are in town and UK is hoping they'll be able to knock them off of their high horse. I think Steve Spurrier is smarter than that. He'll make sure his team is ready to play. True freshman Marcus Lattimore is just ridiculous. UK could put up another fight but they will lose their fourth straight. SC 27 UK 17. Brandon: SC 33 UK 23.

#10 Utah Utes 5-0 @ Wyoming Cowboys 2-4 (0-2) 6 PM ET

The Utes likely make their final trip to Laramie to face Wyoming one last time before they move to the Pac-12. There's not really much good to say about the Cowboys. This game won't be close starting from the kickoff. Utah hopes to move up in the rankings as they light up the scoreboard yet again and score every possible way they can. Sorry Utes, the team you beat last week is better than this one. There's not much you can do about that. Just keep winning and things will work themselves out. That's all you can do. Utah 59 Wyoming 10. Brandon: Utah 45 UW 20.
Jim Tressel's Buckeyes
find themselves atop the
polls once again.

#1 Ohio State Buckeyes 6-0 (2-0) @ #16 Wisconsin Badgers 5-1 (1-1) 7 PM ET

Welcome to the number one ranking in America Buckeyes. Your debut is aired on ESPN in 3D. This game was our runner up for GOW and rightfully so as it should be entertaining. Both teams have explosive offenses. The Badgers fell to the only other ranked opponent on their schedule, that being Michigan State and other than that game the schedule hasn't really been all that tough. Other than the one point win over Arizona State they haven't really been challenged. Plus, ASU isn't that good. They may be at home this week but hosting Terrelle Pryor won't be easy. They'd better be ready for this huge attack OSU has. I like this one to be competitive but I see OSU just making a few more plays than Wiconsin and that will be the difference. OSU 24 Wisconsin 20. Brandon: OSU 34 Wisc 21.

#6 Oklahoma Sooners 5-0 (1-0) vs Iowa State Cyclones 3-3 (1-1) 7 PM ET

ISU gave up 68 points at home to Utah last week and the Sooners are coming off of a bye after they beat Texas 28-20. I don't really see much difference for the Cyclones. They remain among the worst of the Big XII and I don't really see that changing any time soon. Even when the conference is trimmed from twelve to ten members next year. Landry Jones and Ryan Broyles will lead the Sooners to bowl eligibility lighting up the scoreboard and stat sheet like the way the Utes did. OU 54 ISU 17. Brandon: OU 48 ISU 24.

#9 LSU Tigers 6-0 (4-0) vs McNeese State Cowboys 2-3 (1-1) 7 PM ET

LSU is 6-0 because of a lucky bounce on a fake field goal last week. Great idea ... executed poorly and it still worked out. Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good. Having said that, the Tigers did look decent in their close win over Florida. LSU plays their third non-conference game of the year as they host McNeese State and it will get them to 7-0 easily. LSU 44 MSU 6. Brandon: LSU 39 MSU 6.

#22 Florida Gators 4-2 (2-2) vs Mississippi State Bulldogs 4-2 (1-2) 7 PM ET

I didn't do my research but I'm pretty sure Urban Meyer has never lost three consecutive games. It's even rare for one of his teams to lose three in a season. MSU has lost to every ranked opponent they've played and even though I think they have a bright future, I don't see them giving UF the second straight upset in the swamp. Urban will have none of that. Florida gets the victory. FLA 26 MSU 13. Brandon: FLA 27 MSU 17.

#20 Arizona Wildcats 4-1 (1-1) @ Washington State Cougars 1-5 (0-3) 7:30 PM ET

The Wildcats were enjoying being in the top ten. Oregon State spoiled that and now they find themselves one loss away from being unranked. Wazzu hasn't beaten a D-IA school yet and beat Montana State by one point. None of their other games have been close at all. Arizona will rebound after the tough loss to OSU with a big win over WSU. Arizona 45 WSU 17. Brandon: Ariz 42 WSU 24.

Titus Young will help BSU
make their statement to play
for the BCS Title
 #3 Boise State Broncos 5-0 (1-0) @ San Jose State Spartans 1-5 (0-1) 8 PM ET

The Broncos made some headlines this week when the mock BCS standings released. If they were officially released last week, Boise would have been in the number one spot. That's what they're hoping for by season's end as they aspire to play for a National Title. Playing SJSU may not help them reach that goal as they help Boise's strength of schedule take a dive. San Jose State continues their toughest schedule in the country as they face their fifth ranked opponent and fourth in the top 15. This however is their first home game against a ranked opponent. They could use whatever home field advantage they have ... if they had it. The Spartans haven't scored more than sixteen points in any game yet. Even in their victory over D-I AA Southern Utah. Boise State fans are loving the attention the school is getting after from the BCS mock standings. The Broncos will be looking to build from that as they do all they can to prove they belong atop that poll. A blowout here is all they can do in their power to influence that. And they will. BSU 58 SJSU 13. Brandon: BSU 48 SJSU 17.

#23 Air Force Falcons 5-1 (3-0) @ San Diego State Aztecs 3-2 (0-1) 8 PM ET

SDSU lost their second game of the year nearly by three points again as they fell on the road at BYU. Brady Hoke will make sure he has his team focused as they host their first ranked opponent in the Air Force Academy. AFA is looking very impressive so far in 2010. Their only loss was by a touchdown on the road at Oklahoma and they lead the nation in rushing. The Aztecs gave up 271 rushing yards last week to a disappointing BYU team. Ryan Lindley is doing good finding his receivers and could see some success but I don't see this game being close. Air Force cruises to a 4-0 MWC record. AFA 34 SDSU 21. Brandon: AFA 35 SDSU 28.

#8 Alabama Crimson Tide 5-1 (2-1) vs Mississippi Rebels 3-2 (1-1) 9 PM ET

The Tide are still in the top ten after their loss to South Carolina as well they should be. They are still among the best and have one of the most talented offenses in the nation. Jeremiah Masoli and the Rebels will try to give them a second consecutive loss. Uh uh ... NOT happening. Sure Masoli could lead their offense on a couple successful drives but Bama still has a shot to defend their SEC and BCS titles. That is not out of the question and Nick Saban will make sure his players know that. It's time to rebound and continue conference play and it will continue with a comfortable victory. Bama 41 Ole Miss 21. Brandon: Bama 32 Ole Miss 14.

#21 Nevada Wolfpack 6-0 (1-0) @ Hawaii Warriors 4-2 (2-0) 11:30 PM ET

Hawaii is off to an alright start in 2010. They've been scoring a lot of points and that's led them to a 4-2 record. They hung with USC in the opener but had a melt down at Colorado and their schedule since the CU game hasn't been so great. They lost to another top tier WAC school in Fresno State and they're hoping to use their big time passing game to win over Nevada. Both teams have their own unique offenses. Hawaii's always been known for their passing game and Nevada has Colin Kaepernick. Enough said. Beware a shootout people. This one could be in the hundreds ... but I do not see the Warriors being able to pull the upset. It won't be a blowout but not necessarily decided in the last two minutes. UNR 52 UH 41. Brandon: UNR 44 UH 14.

College Football: Week 6

I'm still getting haunted by picking the wrong upsets. In week five I went 12-3 (0-2). Doesn't look too bad until we put Brandon's numbers up next to it. He was a perfect 15-0 (1-0). That puts him at 95-9 (3-3) total for the season. I'm at 87-17 (3-8). I'm getting blown out this season. Looks like I'm gonna need to recover slowly. Dig myself out of the whole. My helmet sticker for last week goes to LaMichael James of Oregon. He ran the ball 31 times and had 257 rushing yards while scoring 3 touchdowns as the Ducks destroyed Stanford 52-31. James shut me up for sure. Brandon went with Denard Robinson, no surprise as he's leading the Heisman race. He'll probably find himself with the helmet sticker a few more times before the end of the season. Last week he threw the ball 16 times, completing 10 of those passes for 277 yards and 3 touchdowns. He also ran the ball 19 times for 217 yards and 2 touchdowns as the Wolverines defeated the Hoosiers. (To see Brandon's picks and other sports opinons etc visit his site http://thebiznizfiles.blogspot.com/. His post last week regarding LeBron James and the "race" thing was excellent. I highly recommend it).

Week six begins with a Big XII battle of undefeated's on Thursday.

Thursday October 7th 2010

#7 Nebraska Cornhuskers 4-0 (1-0) @ Kansas State Wildcats 4-0 (1-0) 7:30PM ET

KSU hosts the Huskers for their fifth consecutive home game. Daniel Thomas has carried the ball 105 times for 628 yards and 6 touchdowns for the Wildcats. Quarterback Carson Coffman has a talented receiving core to throw to. That balanced offense could pose some problems for NU. Two weeks ago the Huskers scored the least amount of points in a game so far this season beating South Dakota State 17-3. That's also the least the defense has allowed this year. Taylor Martinez turned it over three times for NU and they gave up 112 rushing yards to Kyle Minett of the Jackrabbits. With both offenses being capable of scoring it will come down to who's defense plays better. The Huskers I believe have the edge in that category. Look for sparks of a close game with Nebraska pulling away with the victory. NU 34 KSU 24. Brandon: NU 38 KSU 21

Friday October 8th 2010

#21 Oklahoma State Cowboys 4-0 (1-0) @ Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns 2-2 (2-1) 9PM ET

The Cowboys had the nice win over TAMU last Thursday. They have their first road trip of the season as they face the Ragin' Cajuns. OSU scores a lot of points. Brandon Weeden has been huge this year with 1259 yards and 13 TD's through the air. Expect that to continue in Lafayette. OSU 48 ULL 12. Brandon: OSU 48 ULL 17.

Saturday October 9th 2010

#2 Ohio State Buckeyes 5-0 (1-0) vs. Indiana Hoosiers 3-1 (0-1) 12PM ET

The Hoosiers surprised me as they hung around at home but still fell 42-35 to Michigan last week. Traveling to Ohio Stadium won't exactly be an easy way to recover from the close loss. Terelle Pryor is having a great season as he leads this offense. The Buckeyes survived their first road trip of the year with the victory over Illinois. Indiana proved they can compete with the big dawgs in the Big Ten, but I'm not sure I see this one being that close. The Buckeyes are just too powerful. OSU 38 IU 21. Brandon: OSU 40 IU 21.

#19 Wisconsin Badgers 4-1 (0-1) vs. Minnesota Golden Gophers 1-4 (0-1) 12PM ET

Time of possession and MSU's great offense gave the Badgers their first loss of the year. The offense was productive and did their thing, they were just on the field thirteen minutes less and that translated to the scoreboard. Adam Weber leads the way for the Gophers offense who can have put points on the board all season. If he can get things going and keep Scott Tolzein and Jonathan Clay on the sideline this could be a competitive game. Too bad for Weber, the Gophers defense hasn't been very good as they've allowed at least 29 points a game in each of their losses. They allowed 41 to their loss to South Dakota at home. I see this one going to the Badgers comfortably. Wisconsin 48 Minnesota 27. Brandon: Wis. 37 Minn. 18.

Johnathan Franklin leads the powerful rushing attack for
UCLA with 625 yards on 99 carries.

NON TOP-25 Game
UCLA 3-2 (1-1) @ Cal Golden Bears 2-2 (0-1) 3:30PM ET

The Bruins are on a solid run. After their 35-0 embarrassment at home to Stanford they destroyed two ranked opponents, first with 23rd Houston 31-13 then travelling to Austin beating #7 Texas 34-12. They returned home last week to beat Washington State 42-28. They'll try to continue that hot streak as they travel to Berkeley. Cal is on a two game losing streak, their last one being the thriller at Arizona. The Bears haven't lost at home this season in fact they put up 52 points in both games at home over UC Davis and Colorado. Both teams will be relying on their running game as that is their strength. Shane Vereen is the main threat out of the back field for Cal but Kevin Riley knows how to hit his receivers, mainly Marvin Jones. UCLA has used a couple quarterbacks so far but Kevin Prince has taken the majority of the snaps. He can run and throw and they still have Johnathan Franklin and Derrick Coleman in the backfield. I like this game to be close and both offenses to be successful but I think the Bruins have a few more weapons. All they have to do is stop Shane Vereen and Cal is basically shut down. UCLA will cause more problems and come away with their fourth straight victory. UCLA 36 Cal 27. Brandon: UCLA 28 Cal 24.

#1 Alabama Crimson Tide 5-0 (2-0) @ #20 South Carolina Gamecocks 3-1 (1-1) 3:30PM ET

South Carolina has a win over a top 25 team already this year. That was Georgia who is now 1-4. That game is starting to look less impressive for Steve Spurrier. The Gamecocks fell short on the road at Auburn two weeks ago and they host the defending champs who aren't showing any signs of slowing down to defend their title. I like SC to score a touchdown or two. Three if they're lucky but this one won't be close. Nick Saban will lead his team to bowl eligibility in six weeks. The Tide is just too powerful. There are too many weapons and it will roll to 6-0. Bama 35 SC 17. Brandon: Bama 27 SC 18.

#5 TCU Horned Frogs 5-0 (1-0) vs. Wyoming Cowboys 2-3 (0-1) 3:30PM ET

TCU continues their conference play against the Cowboys. They got off to a rough start against CSU last week but still shut them out 27-0. The 'Pokes' come to Fort Worth and even though they kept Air Force in check for a close game (that they ended up losing 20-14) this one could get ugly early. The Frogs remain undefeated. TCU 44 UW 10. Brandon: TCU 37 UW 20.

#13 Arkansas Razorbacks 3-1 (1-1) vs. Texas A&M Aggies 3-1 (0-1) 3:30PM ET (Neutral Field)

Jerrod Johnson has thrown four INT's a piece the last two games. The first one nearly saw a loss to FIU before the Aggies came back in the fourth quarter. Last week he threw four against Oklahoma State and they lost by a field goal. I can almost guarantee if he throws at least two picks and puts Ryan Mallett on the field, this game won't be close. Johnson threw the ball 62 times against OSU. Arkansas is coming off of a bye where they had time to chew on their fourth quarter melt down as Alabama came back from 21-3 to win 24-21. It's time to get down to business for the Razorbacks. TAMU could put up a fight if the offense plays a perfect game, but I give Johnson at least one pick and that will be enough to give Arkansas a comfortable victory. Arkansas 27 TAMU 14. Brandon: TAMU 32 Ark 27.

Denard Robinson leads the way for the
Heisman running so far in 2010.
GAME OF THE WEEK
#16 Michigan State Spartans 5-0 (1-0) @ #17 Michigan Wolverines 5-0 (1-0) 3:30PM ET

When was the last time the state Michigan's two bitter rivals were both 5-0? I'm highly looking forward to this game. MSU wears their road uni's for the first time this season while Michigan is coming home from their close victory at Indiana. The Wolverines defense hasn't really been all that great. Notre Dame is legit but nearly blowing the UMass game? Really? And no one expected the Hoosiers to score 35. Having said that Denard Robinson is a stud. He's 95 rushing yards away from 1000 and he's only played five games. Kirk Cousins threw two picks last week against Wisconsin and Sparty won by double digits, although the defense allowed 178 yards combined between John Clay and James White on the ground for the Badgers. This D hasn't seen a quarterback like Robinson though and could find themselves guessing at times. He is very dangerous. Beware a shootout folks. Both teams know how to get into the endzone and the difference in this one could be which team wins the turnover ratio. Seeing MSU get the win would be great for college football (and don't be surprised if it happens) but I'm not picking it. Robinson takes the slight edge over Cousins. Is a 17 over 16 even considered an upset? Michigan 38 MSU 36. Brandon: Mich. 30 MSU 29.

#3 Oregon Ducks 5-0 (2-0) @ Washington State Cougars 1-4 (0-2) 5PM ET

After last weeks 52-31 thrashing of the Stanford I am convinced ... the Ducks will be Pac-10 Champs. I know that's a bit early to predict as we are near half way through the season but I thought for sure Stanford would pull that one off (OSU still could too, anything can happen in rivalry games right?). Now, with that prediction out of the way I still have to do it one game at a time for Oregon. LaMichael James was huge last week, why wouldn't he be against the conference's worst? Big day for the "Video Game" offense. Oregon 59 WSU 17. Brandon: Oregon 65 WSU 17.

#11 Arizona Wildcats 4-0 (1-0) vs. Oregon State Beavers 2-2 (1-0) 6PM ET

The Beavers face their third top 10 school (in the AP Poll). They tried to play spoiler for two non-AQ powerhouses TCU and Boise State losing by more than a touchdown to both. The offense has been putting up points as expected but this Beaver defense has allowed at least 28 points a game. The Wildcats are coming off of a bye after they squeaked by Cal with a 10-9 victory. The Beavers return WR James Rodgers back from a concussion. Arizona has been proven in the close games and will be trying to prove they continue to belong among the top 15. Oregon State needs a win to save their season. They must get their rushing game going. Jacquizz Rodgers has to open things up for Ryan Katz's passing game. Arizona gave up 102 yards to Shane Vereen but kept the Cal offense out of the endzone. This game took me a very long time to pick. This one will come down to whoever makes the last big play. I want to go with Oregon State but I just don't see their defense being enough. Zona's defense will stop OSU just enough for them to gain the victory. Arizona 31 OSU 27. Brandon: Ariz. 35 OSU 23.

Jordan Wynn has many
weapons to give the ball
to for the tenth ranked
Utes.
#10 Utah Utes 4-0 (2-0) @ Iowa State Hawkeyes 3-2 (1-1) 7PM ET

ISU faces their second top ten team this season (likely to be three next week). They lost 35-7 at Iowa in week two. They put up 52 in their win over Texas Tech last week. They have a well balanced offense led by Senior RB Alexander Robinson. Utah faces their first challenge away from Rice Eccles Stadium (@ UNM isn't considered a challenge). Sophomore QB Jordan Wynn returned as the starter two weeks ago but Terrence Cain filled in nicely for him while he was out with an injured hand. Regardless who takes the snaps, the Utes offense is loaded with talent. The Cyclones have been playing well at home so far this season with their only home loss being to Kansas State by a touchdown. I think ISU could give Utah an upset scare here, but they won't have enough to get it done. The Utes have too much depth offensively for Iowa State to handle. I like the Utes in a semi close game. Utah 27 ISU 19. Brandon: Utah 36 ISU 24.

#22 Missouri Tigers 4-0 vs. Colorado Buffaloes 3-1 7PM ET

Colorado is coming off a two point victory over Georgia at home. That's the only game this year that's been close for them. Their only loss this season was on the road at Cal and lost 52-7. They travel to Faurot Field as they visit the 22nd ranked Tigers of Missouri. Mizzou is also having their fifth consecutive home game and they look to stay undefeated as the Buffs come to town. The only close game was San Diego State when they won 27-24. CU has had an impressive start and hope to come away with the victory, but Blaine Gabbert and the passing game will be too powerful for them. CU could make it close if they don't have any problems turning the ball over. If they do, it's a blowout. Mizzou 27 CU 13. Brandon: Mizzou 35 CU 27.

#8 Auburn Tigers 5-0 (2-0) @ Kentucky Wildcats 3-2 (0-2) 7:30PM ET

Despite a 3-2 (0-2) record UK actually has a decent offense. Derrick Locke and Randall Cobb are the main guys for Mike Hartline's QB abilities and I like them all to have decent games as they host the Tigers. But beware Kentucky defense, Cam Newton is in town. Newton is second on ESPN's Heisman predictor and he's not really been stopped at all by anyone. He will have another field day and be the difference in a close victory. UA 34 UK 28. Brandon: UA 37 UK 24.

Urban Meyer's Gators will
try to avoid their 2nd
consecutive SEC loss.
 #9 LSU Tigers 5-0 (3-0) @ #12 Florida Gators 4-1 (2-1) 7:30PM ET

The Gators were handed their first loss of the season as they got blown out by the Crimson Tide. They were even kept out of the endzone for the entire game. LSU nearly lost to Tennessee. The Vols nearly handed them the win when they were called for having too many men on the field during a play when time expired. That allowed Stevan Ridley to run in for the TD to seal the win. This is a solid SEC match up and the Gators will be looking to build off of their embarrassing loss to Bama. Hosting the Tigers may not be an easy way to do that. Jordan Jefferson averaged twenty yards a carry against Tennessee. This Florida defense got exposed by Bama's running game and the offense gave the ball away three times. LSU had turnover issues of their own against Tennessee, so perhaps this one will come down to which defense gets more turnovers. I see a big game for Ridley but also for Jeff Demps and I see Florida getting just a couple more opportunities to make plays. Home field advantage really does make a difference for some teams. Florida gets the upset in the swamp. FLA 26 LSU 17. Brandon: Fla. 34 LSU 21.

#25 Northwestern Wlidcats 5-0 (1-0) vs. Purdue Boilermakers 2-2 7:30PM ET

Northwestern cracks the coaches poll and begins play as a ranked school against the Boilermakers. Dan Persa has had a great season so far and I don't see why this week would serve any differently for him. Purdue hasn't really been impressive. They lost at home to Toledo by 11. This has potential to be an easy win for NW. Having said that, I think Purdue will do their best to stay competitive in a losing effort. NW 31 Purdue 17. Brandon: NW 30 Purdue 23.

#4 Boise State Broncos 4-0 (1-0) vs. Toledo Rockets 3-2 (2-0) 8PM ET

And so it begins. The Broncos got jumped in the polls by Oregon. And so it may continue. Even though the Nevada match up is looking better for BSU's schedule, the likes of Toledo and the rest of the WAC will probably not be enough for them to reach their ultimate goal of playing for the BCS title. This week however they will be doing what they do, trying to convince the voters, haters etc... what have you. Toledo has a victory over Purdue that looks good on their resume. On the road even. Boise > Purdue. Sorry Rockets. BSU 44 Toledo 17. Brandon: BSU 48 Toledo 20.

#24 Florida State Seminoles 4-1 (2-0) @ #14 Miami (FL) Hurricanes 3-1 (1-0) 8PM ET

The 'Canes come back home after three straight road games and they face their second ranked opponent of the season. Since their 47-17 embarrassment in Norman, Christian Ponder and the Seminoles have outscored their last three opponents 99-24. Granted the combined record of those opponents is 5-10 and we wont include the record of D-I AA Samford. Traveling to Coral Gables won't be a walk. I see them being a bit more competitive here than they were against Oklahoma, but I don't see them having much of an answer for Jacory Harris. No blowout here, but a comfortable win for the Hurricanes. The U 28 FSU 17. Brandon: FSU 36 Miami 33.

USC, led by Matt Barkley is off to
a great start after a dramatic off
season.
#18 Stanford Cardinal 4-1 (1-1) vs. USC Trojans 4-1 (1-1) 8PM ET

Stanford was looking great by halftime in Autzen Stadium with a 31-24 lead. Then they didn't seem to come out of the locker room and didn't score again losing 52-31. USC had a one point loss at home to Jake Locker and the Washington Huskies. Both teams will want to build from those losses. Folks, prepare for another shootout. Matt Barkley is a stud and Allen Bradford his running the ball very well this season excluding the Virginia game. He had 223 yards against the Huskies. Both teams look pretty even and I like Andrew Luck to have a big game but I don't really see much of a running game for the Cardinal and that will be the difference. USC's running game on top of a solid game through the air for Barkley will serve as the victor for the Trojans. Luck gets loss number two in a row. USC 27 Stanford 21. Brandon: Stanford 30 USC 24.

#23 Nevada Wolfpack 5-0 (3-0) vs. San Jose State Spartans 1-4 (0-3) 10:35PM ET

Nevada just beat their third MWC opponent of the season with their 44-26 victory over in state rival UNLV. Looks like they may fit in well with that conference in 2012. This week they start WAC play at home against San Jose State on ESPNU. The Spartans just lost by a point to UC Davis (potentially a WAC filler). This is their fourth ranked opponent they face and it will be five next week when they host Boise State. Their only win was a 16-11 victory at home to Southern Utah. The Spartans are just flat out terrible. Big day for Colin Kaepernick and co. UNR 43 SJSU 6. Brandon: UNR 50 SJSU 21.
